Australian Drover Style Home
Truly a one-of-a-kind gem. This three master bedroom, four full bathroom home was designed by and built under the keen eye of Atlanta architect Virgil Pinnell for his family residence.
At roadside is a gated entry to the long driveway through a pecan orchard up to an oval drive in front of this gorgeous home. It's a spacious Australian Drover Style home with lots of custom features.
The home sits back away from the road on a partly wooded 10+ acres dotted with metal sculptures created by Virgil himself.
The exterior features a huge, deep porch that partially wraps three sides of the home makes this the perfect setting for enjoying the peaceful and tranquil great outdoors in this desirable Redbone area of Barnesville nestled among large pastoral swaths of agricultural fields.
Down under and around the side of the house is a two-car garage with plenty of extra space outback for more parking outside the garage. The garage is part of the full basement featuring lots of storage space and room for perhaps a fishing boat and trailer. There is also a workbench with plenty of workspace for projects big and small. In a couple of minutes I'll share more about this basement.
Back to the main entry on the front porch. Step inside to a cute foyer with an oversized coat closet. There's a living room to the left and a long wide hall straight ahead.
The living room has lots of windows and a large welcoming fireplace. Next to the fireplace is convenient access to a guest bathroom that also has entry from the hallway. This bathroom is a full bath with a walk-in shower.
Also from the living room is the entry into the formal dining room featuring a bank of windows looking out onto the wraparound porch. There is also a door that goes from here out to the porch, making a great place for less formal outdoor dining. The dining room includes a nook for a sideboard or china cabinet. There is a gorgeous, modern chandelier that hangs over where the table will go.
From the dining room is entry into the spacious kitchen where you'll find an eat-at island with an open gas stovetop perfect for visiting with family or guests while meal are being prepared. A huge stainless-steel vent hood covers the entire island. Nearby is an in-wall oven, a dishwasher and a refrigerator that is next to a pantry closet. There's plenty of cabinet and counter space for even the most well-appointed kitchen. The kitchen is mostly open to a less formal living area that occupies the end of the long hall from the foyer.
Next to this living area is an informal dining area that looks out over a balcony porch overlooking the woods out back. This dining area is also where you find the stairs down to the basement garage. At the opening to the stairwell is a small door in the wall that gives access to a pulley operated dumbwaiter from the garage downstairs. A convenient way to get all the groceries from your car up to the kitchen.
Let’s go back to the foyer. A few steps down the hall on the left is the hall entrance to the full bath. Across the hall on the right you will find bedroom suite number one. Across the room there are windows that look onto the side and front porch. The an-suite has a large linen/storage closet and a large walk-in closet. There is also a large vanity. A door in this area opens to a bathroom that features both a walk-in shower and a bathtub.
Back in the hall, a short distance away is bedroom suite number two on the right across from the laundry closet in the hall. There is a bank of windows that look onto a separate enclosed porch accessed by a door from the bedroom. This is the exercise room, private reading room, an office, a cozy retreat, or whatever you wish. Its windows look to the south flooding it with sunlight during the day and there is a private exit to the yard. Like bedroom suite number one, this bedroom has an an-suite with a linen/storage closet, a walk-in closet and a vanity. The bathroom features a large walk-in shower.
Back in the hall again and we are at the family living area - but just beyond that -- on the right -- is another room. This room was Mr. Pinnell’s office/studio. It is divided into two rooms. The front part was his office/consultation room, and the back was where he drafted all his architectural drawings. You may find a similar use for this room or perhaps use it for a library, or nursery, or just a spare room. In these troubling days it can be the home school room or video conferencing space. Maybe even a playroom just for the stay-at-home children.
Next to the kitchen is a staircase. Up at the landing is the entrance to bedroom suite number three. This luxurious suite includes vaulted ceilings with skylights. The an-suite has a shower/tub stall. Past the an-suite are closets, and a large sitting area overlooking a balcony porch that looks out over the woods out back.
Ok, now we go back to the basement. The basement/garage also has built in kennel facilities that include 4 dog pens that open to their own dog-runs outside. Inside is also a tub and grooming table. Next to the kennels is a door out to the back yard for easy access to the dog-runs. Gates at the ends of the runs open to the fenced yard surrounding the home.
The 10-plus acres include a spring-fed pond with a gazebo next to it just a short distance from the house. There are two formal gardens close to the house. The lot is close to rectangular in shape with one long edge along the road. There is plenty of room to add a stable for grazing a few horses. The home is close to a fly-in equestrian community with riding trails. For hunters: they also open their land for hunting.
This is a rare find and a must see for anyone who can appreciate the refined features of this unique home. All the original elevations and building plans come with the home as well. Virgil would have wanted you to keep them.
